How much minced garlic is in a clove?

Published by riseandbrine on

This is a tricky question, because cloves of garlic come in all sizes. So how much minced garlic is in a clove? On average, one clove of garlic is equal to about one heaping teaspoon of minced garlic.

If you only have a jar of minced garlic or a tube of garlic paste, use 1 to 1.5 teaspoons of minced garlic, or garlic paste, per clove that your recipe calls for. Adjust according to your personal taste — cooking is not an exact science!

If you have dried minced or dried granulated garlic, use just one teaspoon per clove since the pieces are smaller.

Garlic powder is not the same as minced garlic. If your recipe calls for one teaspoon of minced garlic, you can substitute about 1/2 a teaspoon of garlic powder. You need to use less per clove because the garlic powder has more surface area, and will have more of an impact on your recipe.

How many tsp is one clove of garlic?

Even though one clove of garlic is roughly one rounded teaspoon of minced garlic, you should adjust this spice to your taste. Part of the fun of cooking is that it constantly challenges you to adjust ingredients based on what you have available and what you like to eat!

The strength of the garlic flavor will differ between garlic cloves depending on type of garlic, the size, the age or freshness, and other factors. Minced garlic from a jar will also vary in flavor and strength, and usually is less pungent or spicy than fresh garlic. The same is true of dried garlic in minced, granulated, or powdered form.

Always adjust your garlic based on personal preference and who you are cooking for. Some are sensitive to the flavor of garlic, while some (like me!) love extra garlic in everything! Make food that you love to eat, and don’t worry about the details.
